Talked to Swami Adriishananda today, and he recommended that instead of a practice which I had been doing called Sun Gazing, that I instead start with a practice Trataka, which means "to gaze" or "to stare" in Sanskrit.
While similar, the practice is a bit different. Two of the purely physiological purposes of Trataka are to strengthen your ability concentrate (mental focus), and to strengthen your eyes.
One of the psychological purposes is to calm and even clear your mind by simply staring at an object, any object, and focusing all of your attention on it and think of nothing else other than the image your are looking at. When any other thought pops in your head, simply let it go and immediately refocus on the object you were staring at.
Going to start tonight.
